Description
Sandalwood Album, also referred to as Indian Sandalwood or “Old Mountain” Sandalwood, has been a tough oil to source due to high demand and sparse natural resources. In its native habitat, Southern India, wild populations have become vulnerable to near extinction and are under strict regulation due to non-sustainable harvesting practices. Our distiller of Australian Sandalwood has been cultivating Sandalwood Album trees on their plantation, and we have been waiting literally years for them to harvest. The wait does not disappoint. Love at first whiff.
Santalum album has a high santalol content, at about 90%, compared with Santalum spicatum at around 39% providing a nonsteroidal approach to anti-inflammatory treatments. Clinical studies report the effectiveness of a therapeutic dose in combatting symptoms due to viral infections such as cold sores and genital warts. Medicinally, Sandalwood is a powerhouse… especially for dry, chapped skin.
The emotional aromatic effect was that of comfort and grounding. I admire it in the world of perfumery as a unisex cologne base. My first sniff from a scent strip felt like a smooth, soft caress of sweet, fresh heartwood. I could have cuddled a cactus if it smelled this sensual.
In Sanskrit, Sandalwood album is referred to as Chandana, meaning “scented wood” in addition to more modern translations as “shining, glowing” referring to the derivative word Chandra (moon). In its own definition I find the meanings descriptive of the aroma… pleasant, charming, sensual, and of course glowing, shining.
