Description
When I talked with our new supplier of White Sage essential oil (and soon hydrosol) my heart sang. He told me stories of their family farm in California, and how connected with the indigenous community they are. Mutual respect and gratitude was evident. Once we were informed that this precious sage was grown sustainably on a certified organic, family owned farm, we knew we had to have it.
The white sage market has little evidence of growers, but a lot of vendors selling “wild harvested” sage from the “hills of California”. This should present a red flag to anyone valuing sustainable sourcing. Poaching of wild white sage for commercial sale has threatened the plant’s survival in recent years. Indigenous communities have had a relationship with white sage for thousands of generations. This California native species of sage faces endangerment due to rampant illegal poaching of its wild populations. Revered for its profound cultural significance, it has long been used by Native peoples of Southern California and Mexico, in medicine and sacred ceremonies. We are grateful to have discovered this trustworthy, protected source. When the local tribal elders put their faith in this growers efforts we know we can too, and are honored to share it with you.
It is the sage most often used in Native American rituals, for smudging, and if, for some reason it is not appropriate to burn the actual herb, then perhaps misting with a spray of this powerful oil would be appropriate. The energy of the oil is amazing.
With that said, like all true sages, White Sage is a powerful antibacterial and deodorizer. We would recommend its use for eliminating airborne germs/viruses and purification of your surroundings. White Sage, in particular, is also said to be calming and de-stressing.
If diffusing essential oils is not a convenient method for you, you may enjoy the ease of use that hydrosols provide. My daughter uses them in her dorm room and her roommate loves her for it.
Please note: If you compare analysis of past batches, this US grown was harvested in Southern California at close to sea level. The Canadian we offered many years ago was a High Altitude crop. We have always been taught that High Altitude Sages are lower in camphor. We had forgotten that the converse of this is that low altitude Sages are higher in camphor. To our noses, it smells exactly like White Sage should smell. It is a beautiful specimen.
