Description
Spikenard Oil (also called Nard) is one of the oldest of the sacred oils, and is the ointment mentioned in the New Testament. Mary Magdalene is supposed to have used it to anoint her master’s feet. It has traditionally been a part of the incense used in many religious traditions. From a spiritual aspect, it is believed to inspire devotion and add to inner peace.
There are those who say it aids in finding their inner balance, spiritually and emotionally. It is an essential component in any spiritual blend. It is recommended for use as part of “inner journeying” blends.
It is an emotionally healing oil, helping one to release old fears and grudges, and move on.
Narde has been used for millennium as a healing agent for skin disturbances, and as a beauty aid to maintain youthful skin. As a relative of valerian, it may be useful in treating insomnia and migraines.
Kurt Schnaubelt, in Advanced Aromatherapy writes of Spikenard: “This oil consists primarily of sedative components. It contains only sesquiterpenoids, such as valeranol, valerenal, and especially valeranone, which are responsible for the sedative effects. The external application of the oil, rubbed over the heart or the solar plexus, provides the desired sedative effect. This oil has a distinct affinity for the skin, and is one of the few oils which has any effect against dandruff.”
One aromatherapist blends it with Roman Chamomile, Petitgrain, and Clary. She says it is a wonderful relaxant for tight muscles, especially in the shoulders, back of the neck.
Gumbel says that Spikenard Essential Oil is the oil to use in seeking inner balance, while Worwood says that its use will encourage forgiveness, and instill calm and, again, balance.
There is much talk today about the sustainability of Spikenard. Our supplier has set up 2 distillation units in very remote parts of Nepal. This area was badly hit by the earthquake of 2015, and by beginning the harvest and distillation of wild harvested Spikenard, our supplier is able to bring some prosperity to this area.
