Nature’s Gift Web Site Style Sheet

Punctuation

  • One space after all punctuation.
  • Please use series commas.
  • Spaces around hyphens, like this: Essential Oils / Hydrosols
  • Italics for the first punctuation mark just after italic.
  • Links: do not include the punctuation.
Example: I love buying essential oils from Nature’s Gift!

  • Periods and commas generally inside quotes (American style):
    Mom said, “I love it!”

  • Use curly quotes and apostrophes (html below).

  • Use en-dashes between numbers and dates (html below):
Add between 4–6 ounces Fractionated Coconut Oil.

  • To insert a parenthetical clause, use an em-dash (html below):
Rose Essential Oil—when used sparingly—inspires true love.

Here’s the html for punctuation:

To Show HTML Displays As
Left Double Quotation Mark “
Right Double Quotation Mark ”
Left Single Quotation Mark ‘
Right Single Quotation Mark (including English possessives and contractions) ’
En-Dash –
Em-Dash —
Ellipsis …

Glossary

  • Skin care (two words). Or if it’s a compound adjective then hyphenate as in “skin-care regimen.”
  • Words with hyphens (although we don’t need to be super-consistent because of search):
    Steam-distilled. Hydro-distilled. Cold-pressed.
    Anti-viral, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal.
  • Email, not e-mail.
  • Web site, not website.
  • Scientific names: italic, second word with lower case first letter: Helichrysum italicuum.
  • Essential Oils:
Ylangylang, not Ylang-ylang, Ylang-Ylang, or YlangYlang (but Marge doesn’t need it consistent, again for search)
    Red Mandarine (keep last “e”)
  • 1,8-cineole.

When dealing with measures, use numerals. Otherwise, spell out one through ten, using numerals for 11 and onward. Exception: 10% dilution.

Products

  • When listing products available on the Nature’s Gift site, use U/lc (upper and lower case): Jasmine Sambac Essential Oil.
Otherwise use lower case only: the jasmine essential oils from other web sites are inferior.

Product Listings

  • Product name should be U/lc, with commas for descriptors (no other punctuation) and no periods for sizes:
    Geranium, Rose, 15 ml
Geranium, Rose, Bulk, 1 fl oz

  • Please follow this order for short descriptions (using commas between each): Species, production method, how distilled from what, from where.
    Examples:
Laurus nobilis, organically produced, steam-distilled from leaves, France.
Citrus bergamia, conventionally farmed, cold-pressed rind, Italy.

  • For production method, please be consistent and use one of the following:
    Organically produced
    Organically produced but not certified
    Wildcrafted
    Ethically farmed
    Conventionally farmed

  • Organic Products

If a product is organic, don’t include “organic” in it’s main product name, unless there is a similar product that is conventional.

If the product is organically produced, please make the meta header reflect that (for search):
Nature’s Gift | Aromatherapy Blends and Products | Organic Rose Otto Essential Oil
