For several years we have been unable to source a true Mediterranean Petitgrain bigarade. All that was available was the oil from trees grown in Paraguay. (Which I have since learned should be labeled “Petitgrain paraguay” because of slight differences in composition.) We were surprised and delighted to find this lovely Italian specimen. Aromatically this Italian Petitgrain bigarde is a bit softer with a hint of a floral touch to it. I only enjoyed its predecessor in blends, this oil I enjoy diffusing on its own.
Arctander writes, of Petitgrain Bigarde: “of pleasant, fresh-floral, sweet odor, reminiscent of orange flowers, with a slightly wood-herbacious undertone, and very faint but sweet floral dry-out notes.”
Emotionally, it’s a powerful oil, calming anxiety and panic, acting as an antidepressant.
Physically, it tends to be a sedative, which agrees with its relaxing effect on the mind. Some authorities recommend it for treating rapid heartbeat, and for insomnia. I have also seen it used in recipes for deodorant blends. Petitgrain oil is an ingredient in our anti-anxiety blend, Reunité. Basically, Petitgrain may be used in any application for which one would use Neroli; at a lower cost.
My CCAP instructor, when we were studying Petitgrain Bigarade in class, recommended it for “Monkey Mind”... you know, it’s three a.m. you have slept for a few hours and now your mind is just running, tomorrow’s todo list, next week’s crisis, all the things one’s mind can chatter on about at 3:00 am. My personal experience? Yes! Worked like a charm.
SHELF LIFE: Approximately 2 to 3 years after you open the bottle. Storing in the dark, refrigerated, and decanting half full bottles into smaller, full bottles will extend shelf life.
