Lime Rind, Kaffir (no ratings yet)
Kaffir Lime, (Combava) or Makrut Lime, Citrus hystrix, grown organically, steam-distilled rind, Thailand.
- Anti-acne
- Effective pain relief
- Mood elevating

We have offered Combava Petitgrain, the oil distilled from the leaf of the Cistrus hystrix, the Kaffir Lime, also called Makrut Lime. Now we are able to offer the oil from the zest, as well. This is an unusual Citrus oil, far lower in d-limonene than most citrus oils, it is a deeper note, for perfumery, rather than the light top note we expect from a citrus oil. Buried amid its complexities is a slim strand of light, sunny true lime. An interesting oil indeed.

I first read about this extremely rare citrus oil in Robert Tisserand’s skincare course. (Also where I learned about our rare Rosemary ch A-pinene.) In teaching about treatments for acne vulgaris, Robert referenced studies showing the effectiveness of both these oils against Proprionibacterium Acne. Of the more “benign” essential oils these were the most effective, and definitely worth trying in anti-acne products. In addition, Jennifer Rhind cited research indicating that Kaffir Lime oil may also have anti-inflammatory properties when used in skincare.

Rhind also indicates that Kaffir Lime’s high level of terpines and monoterpenols might make it an effective addition to a pain relieving blend based on traditional Thai herbal medicine, combining with Plai, and just a hint of Lemongrass. She also stresses the mood elevating effect of Kaffir Lime, a bit stimulating and, like most other Citrus oils, a smile bringer. I would not want to use it in a bedtime blend, it is a bit too stimulating, but when facing a lot of challenges in the day ahead, it is definitely a “yes I can” oil.
