This cousin of Tea Tree has an odor reminiscent of eucalyptus. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves.

March 2017. We were shocked at the color of this batch, and contacted our supplier, who said, “It is distilled in copper.” I have seen copper distilled oils turn green in the past, but never this bright lime Jello tone, so we sent it out for further testing. The chemist who tested it wrote, “I have scrutinized the tiniest peaks available on my MS analysis, but I did not find anything odd there. No trace of chamazulene, guaiazulene, or dehydrochamazulenes either, which could have explained the phenomenon.” (He also found no trace of contamination. We promptly ordered more, from the same batch, to cover our investment in the extra testing. It’s a relief to be able to make it available to you!

As an inhalant, it is stimulating and I find it clears my mind. It’s one of the first oils I reach for at the start of a cold or virus. It also is useful for sore aching muscles, rheumatism, etc. I dilute it down and use as a “chest rub” for bronchial problems. It doesn’t irritate my daughter’s asthma and has an antispasmodic effect that can aid it. It is said to be good for oily skin or acne, but I think it’s a bit strong for skin care. Some authorities say it is an effective insect repellant. It is the BEST immediate first aid for fire ant bites, for those who live where those pests are prevalent.

And on another note.....Never thought I would need cajeput but had some on hand just in case. Stepped in a small hill of fire ants a couple of weeks ago and remembered I had the cajeput. I immediately applied it undiluted to the bites and the stinging ceased immediately. I thank God for the gifts of nature and people like you who educated others on how to use these gifts.

Thanks for the feedback, Pam. I don’t like suggesting that ANY oil be used neat (undiluted) but sometimes you don’t have a choice!

SAFETY: Robert Tisserand advises that Cajeput, like other oils high in 1,8-cineole, can cause breathing problems in young children.

SHELF LIFE: Approximately 2 to 3 years after you open the bottle.  Storing dark, refrigerated, and decanting half full bottles into smaller, full bottles will extend shelf life.

  • 5 Really Works!

Posted by Shari L. from Georgia on 06/18/2018

Being outside all the time I invariably am getting bitten, cut, scratched, etc. This morning was the fire ant attack so I thought I’d try what the gals at NG had suggested and use Cajeput. Diluted it in a little FCO and there was immediate relief. A couple hours later still no itching, discomfort, etc. that usually accompanies those nasty fire ant bites and now hours later still no "symptoms". In fact I had totally forgotten I had even gotten bit. This oil is awesome!. Thanks Marge and crew for supplying us with another great product.
