Sweet Birch oil, high in methyl salicylate is a superb pain reliever for acute pain. Because of the risk of chronic toxicity it should not be used on a routine basis, and we do not advise its use for chronic pain. It does, however, have its uses, under the guidance of a trained clinical aromatherapist. This is NOT an oil for the amateur or the home user.

Aromatically Sweet Birch is delightful, it has the sweet fresh aroma of Wintergreen gum or mints. Since it must never be used internally, yet tastes like candy, it is essential that this oil be kept tightly sealed and totally out of reach of children.

In the past I have used it, diluted in St. John’s Wort Infused Oil, as a treatment for the pain of gout. But I would not use it for chronic aches and pains. There are effective pain relievers that do not carry the risks of Sweet Birch or Wintergreen.

For more information, please see our Safety Page about Wintergreen and Sweet Birch.

SAFETY:  Robert Tisserand advises that Sweet Birch is contraindicated with anticoagulant medicines, major surgery, hemophelia, other bleeding disorders.  Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children.  Salicylate sensitivity, including ADD/ADHD, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).  Inhibits blood clotting, toxicity issues, high doses may be teratogenic.  Maximum dermal level 2.5%.  Topical application can potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, leading to possible internal hemorrhage.
